Why did the Greeks call Mesopotamia by that name?

Mesopotamia is located in the middle-east, a flat plain between the Tigris and the Euphrates rivers.
Mainly where modern-day Iraq is now found.
The Greek name “Mesopotamia” simply means “between the rivers”.
