Why is New York called “The Big Apple”?

New York is one of the most famous American cities.
Because it is located in the homonimous state, it is usually referred to as New York City (acronym: NYC).
Its subway system is the largest in the world and the City itself is a very popular tourist destination…

The nickname “The Big Apple” began being used officially in 1971 as a slogan to promote tourism in the city.
Even before that, in the 1920s, it was used by a sports journalist to refer to the city’s hippodrome.
The New York colonie was one of the 13 that rebelled against England, starting the American Revolutionary War.
